With no federal purchase credit, state and utility programs decide what you can save. Here's how to find the ones that apply where you live.

There is no longer a single federal purchase credit to rely on, so incentives now depend almost entirely on your state, your utility and sometimes your city. Two buyers of the same car in different states can face very different net prices.

We publish a checked page for each state we have reviewed against primary sources — you'll find the list further down this page. Each one shows the programs that are open, the ones that have closed, and what your utility offers on top.

Why it varies so much

State programs are funded from state budgets and open and close with them. Some run generous point-of-sale rebates, some offer nothing, and several have paused programs after exhausting their funding.

Where to check

Always verify with a primary source before you count an incentive into your budget.

  • Your state energy office or environmental agency website
  • Your electric utility's EV and charger rebate pages
  • The federal Alternative Fuels Data Center state incentive listings
  • The dealer's finance office — but confirm anything they quote independently

Beyond cash rebates

Non-cash incentives can be worth more than a rebate over three years: HOV lane access, reduced registration fees, toll discounts, and time-of-use electricity rates for overnight charging.

Charger rebates

Utility rebates on Level 2 hardware and installation are widespread and frequently missed — many utilities pay several hundred dollars towards a charger, sometimes on top of a discounted overnight EV rate. Our state incentive pages list the programs available where you live.
