Privacy policy

This page is maintained by the What EV team and explains what we collect when you use the cost calculator, the EV quiz, the battery health checker and our guides. It is written for visitors in the United States, including residents of states with consumer privacy laws such as California. Last updated 2026.

What we collect

You can use every tool on What EV without giving us any personal information. We record anonymous, aggregate answers from our tools — things like annual mileage, driving profile, charging access, budget band, odometer reading and which models matched — so we can improve them. These records contain no name, address, IP address or account.

This covers all three interactive tools: the running-cost calculator, the “which EV suits you” quiz, and the used EV battery health & range checker. The battery health checker is handled the same way as the others — the model, registration year, odometer reading and charging habits you enter are used only to produce the result in your browser, and are recorded as anonymous, aggregate answers with no personal data attached. The downloadable PDF report is generated entirely on your device from the figures already on screen; it is never uploaded to us, and it contains no identifying information beyond what you typed.

The one piece of personal information we collect is your email address, and only if you choose to type it in on the quiz results page to have your matches sent to you. It is optional.

Categories of personal information

Using the categories set out in the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, in the past twelve months we have collected:

  • Identifiers — an email address, only where you voluntarily submit one to receive your quiz results. Source: you. Purpose: sending the results you requested.
  • Commercial / preference information — the anonymous answers you give our tools (mileage, budget band, charging access, vehicle model, odometer, charging habits). Source: you. Purpose: producing your result and improving the tools.
  • Internet or network activity — aggregate page analytics, and only if you accept analytics cookies. Purpose: understanding which pages are useful.
  • Coarse geolocation — a two-letter country code supplied by our hosting provider so we show US rather than UK figures. No IP address or finer location is stored.

We do not collect Social Security numbers, financial account details, precise geolocation, biometric data, or any category of sensitive personal information, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.

No sale or sharing of personal information

We do not sell your personal information and we have not sold it in the past twelve months. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, we run no advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels, and we do not use your information for automated decision-making or profiling. Because we neither sell nor share personal information, there is no “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” process to opt out of — but you can still exercise the rights below.

How it is stored and how long we keep it

Submissions are stored in an access-controlled database with row-level security enabled. No public or anonymous read access is granted, so stored records — including email addresses — are not reachable from any public endpoint or from the website itself. Data is transmitted over HTTPS only.

Anonymous tool submissions are retained for up to 24 months, after which they are deleted. Email addresses are retained only for as long as needed to send the results you asked for, and are deleted on request. Analytics records, where you have accepted analytics cookies, are retained for up to 14 months.

Who we disclose it to

We disclose personal information only to service providers who process it on our behalf under contract — our hosting provider, our database provider, and (where you accept analytics cookies) our analytics provider. They may not use it for their own purposes. We do not disclose personal information to advertisers or data brokers.

Your US state privacy rights

Depending on where you live, state law — including the CCPA/CPRA in California, and comparable laws in states such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas and Oregon — may give you the right to:

  • know what personal information we have collected about you and why;
  • request a copy of that information, or have it ported to you;
  • request correction of inaccurate personal information;
  • request deletion of your personal information;
  • opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (we do neither);
  • not be discriminated against — we do not charge different prices or provide a different level of service because you exercised a privacy right.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details on the site and tell us which right you are exercising. We will verify your request by matching the email address you contact us from against the one you submitted. An authorized agent may submit a request on your behalf with written permission. We respond within 45 days, and may extend once where the law allows. Because our tool analytics are anonymous and cannot be linked back to any individual, these rights apply in practice to any email address you gave us. California residents may also appeal a refused request by replying to our response.

Cookies and consent

Strictly necessary cookies keep the site working and your cookie choice remembered. Optional analytics cookies are only ever set after you actively accept them in our cookie banner; nothing analytics-related loads before that — no scripts, no cookies, no requests. Your choice is stored in a first-party, SameSite=Lax, Secure cookie containing only the categories you agreed to, the date and a policy version. You can change or withdraw it at any time via Cookie settings in the footer, and we re-ask after six months. We do not respond differently to browser Global Privacy Control signals because we neither sell nor share personal information.

Third-party price data

Our pages fetch live gasoline and electricity prices from public data feeds. These requests are made by our servers, not your browser, so those providers do not receive your details.
