Charging speeds and connectors in the US
A glossary for the terms you will see on the map.
- Level 1 (under 2kW)
- A standard 120V outlet. Adds a few miles an hour β emergency use only.
- Level 2 (3β19kW)
- 240V charging, the workhorse at home, workplaces and destinations.
- DC fast (50β149kW)
- Roadside rapid charging, typically 20β80% in 30β45 minutes.
- Ultra-fast DC (150kW+)
- Highway corridor charging, 10β80% in around 20 minutes on a capable car.
- NACS / Tesla
- The North American standard, now adopted by most automakers.
- CCS
- The combined DC standard on most non-Tesla EVs sold to date.
- J1772
- The Level 2 AC plug on nearly every non-Tesla EV.
- CHAdeMO
- Legacy DC standard, mainly older Nissan Leafs.
