How we produce our EV figures
Everything on What EV is built from published specification data and transparent arithmetic. This page explains exactly what that means, so you can judge how much weight to give any number you see.

Where the model data comes from
Prices, battery capacities, seat counts, cargo space, acceleration figures and official range are taken from manufacturer specification sheets and the relevant official range standard for your country — NRCan combined, quoted for the Canadian market in Canadian dollars. Where a model is not sold in a given market, it does not appear in that market.
Prices are indicative starting figures for a new car, excluding options and dealer-specific discounts. Used values are typical three-year-old market prices rather than a valuation of any individual car.
How the model summaries are written
Our model pages are structured summaries generated from that specification data: each car is scored against every other car we hold for the same market on range, battery, practicality, performance, technology and value, and the write-up describes where it lands. The pros and cons come from those comparisons, not from an opinion typed in by hand.
We do not road test cars. There is no test driver, no instrumented range test and no photography of our own. If you want subjective driving impressions, read a road test from a publication that does that work — our job is the numbers and the maths around them.
How the running-cost maths works
The detailed running cost calculator and the quick fuel cost calculator multiply your own distance and efficiency figures by current gas and electricity prices. Energy and fuel prices are refreshed from public data feeds; every other input is yours. Nothing is weighted or adjusted behind the scenes.
Where a calculation needs an assumption you have not supplied — servicing, insurance deltas, Registration — we use a published national average and say so on the page.
How often figures are checked
Guides carry their own "last updated" date, showing when that specific article was last re-verified. Model pages carry a "figures checked" date for the specification dataset. Fuel and electricity prices update automatically; specifications and prices are reviewed in periodic sweeps.
What we do not do
- We do not publish star ratings or aggregate scores from users we do not have.
- We do not take payment from manufacturers to change a score or a recommendation.
- We do not store the answers you type into the calculators against your identity.
Corrections
If a figure looks wrong, it may well be. Specifications change mid-model-year and prices move constantly. Our records are re-checked on a periodic schedule, and the date on the page is updated when they are.
