Privacy policy
This page is maintained by the What EV team and explains what we collect when you use the cost calculator, the EV quiz, the battery health checker and our guides. It is written for visitors in Australia and follows the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Last updated 2026.
What we collect
You can use every tool on What EV without giving us any personal information. We record anonymous, aggregate answers from our tools β things like annual distance driven, driving profile, charging access, budget band, odometer reading and which models matched β so we can improve them. These records contain no name, address, IP address or account.
This covers all three interactive tools: the running-cost calculator, the βwhich EV suits youβ quiz, and the used EV battery health & range checker. The battery health checker is handled the same way as the others β the model, registration year, odometer reading and charging habits you enter are used only to produce the result in your browser, and are recorded as anonymous, aggregate answers with no personal data attached. The downloadable PDF report is generated entirely on your device from the figures already on screen; it is never uploaded to us, and it contains no identifying information beyond what you typed.
The one piece of personal information we collect is your email address, and only if you choose to type it in on the quiz results page to have your matches sent to you. It is optional. You may use our tools anonymously or under a pseudonym (APP 2).
Why we collect it
We collect personal information only where it is reasonably necessary for our functions (APP 3) β that is, to send you results you have asked for β and we use it only for that purpose (APP 6). We do not collect sensitive information, government identifiers, or information about children where avoidable.
Country detection
So that you see Australian prices, rebates and vehicles, our hosting provider passes only a two-letter country code to the site at the network edge. We never see or store your IP address, and no location more precise than the country is used or retained. If we cannot determine a supported country we ask you to choose one, and store that choice in a strictly necessary cookie for twelve months.
How it is stored and overseas disclosure
Submissions are stored in an access-controlled database with row-level security enabled. No public or anonymous read access is granted, and data is transmitted over HTTPS only (APP 11). Our hosting, database and analytics providers may store data outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union (APP 8); we use providers that apply comparable protection by contract.
Direct marketing
We do not use your email address for direct marketing (APP 7). It is used only to send the specific results you requested, and is deleted on request.
How long we keep it
Anonymous submissions are retained for up to 24 months. Email addresses are kept only for as long as needed to send the results you requested, then destroyed or de-identified.
Cookies and consent
Strictly necessary cookies keep the site working and your cookie choice remembered. Optional analytics cookies are only ever set after you actively accept them in our cookie banner; nothing analytics-related loads before that. You can change or withdraw consent at any time via Cookie settings in the footer, and we re-ask after six months.
Access, correction and complaints
You may ask for access to the personal information we hold about you (APP 12) and ask us to correct it (APP 13). Because our tool analytics are anonymous, these rights apply in practice to any email address you have given us. If you are not satisfied with how we handled your request or a privacy complaint, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Charging station map
The Chargers Near Me tool embeds a live map from Open Charge Map (openchargemap.org), a third-party open database of public charge points, with map data from OpenStreetMap contributors. If you choose to share your location or search by suburb or postcode, that request goes directly from your browser to Open Charge Map β it does not pass through What EV's servers, and What EV does not collect, see or store it, so it is not personal information held by us under the Privacy Act 1988. Open Charge Map's own privacy practices govern that exchange.
Third-party price data
Our pages fetch live fuel and electricity prices from public data feeds, including the Australian Institute of Petroleum weekly national average. These requests are made by our servers, not your browser, so those providers do not receive your details.
