Public charging in the UK is not one network but dozens, each with its own pricing, payment method and reliability record. Knowing which ones you will realistically use matters more than the total number of chargers in the country.

The main networks
A handful of operators account for most rapid and ultra-rapid charging on the UK motorway and A-road network.
- Ionity — ultra-rapid, motorway-focused, subscription plans cut the per-kWh rate sharply
- InstaVolt — contactless-only, no app or subscription, consistently strong reliability record
- GridServe — Electric Highway sites plus dedicated Electric Forecourts
- BP Pulse and Shell Recharge — large mixed networks with app and contactless options
- Tesla Superchargers — many sites now open to non-Tesla drivers, usually at a higher rate without a membership
How pricing differs
Rates are quoted per kWh and vary widely between networks, and often between sites on the same network. Subscriptions, idle fees and minimum charges all change the effective cost.
- Ultra-rapid charging typically costs the most per kWh
- Monthly subscriptions can pay for themselves if you charge publicly every week
- Idle fees apply once charging finishes at busy sites
Access and payment
Contactless card payment is now required on new rapid chargers, but older units may still need an app or RFID card. Roaming apps let you use several networks through one account, usually at a small premium.
Choosing a network for how you drive
Occasional long-distance drivers are usually better off paying as they go on contactless. Regular public chargers should compare subscription plans against their monthly kWh.
